Amos 1

Amos 1:13
Thus says the LORD,
"For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
In order to enlarge their borders.
It appears several of the surrounding nations joined together to attack Gilead, because it's mentioned in several of the condemnations.  I'm not sure if this was a recent event, or something further back that God is now punishing the people for.  But whichever it was, the punishment certainly appears due.

Today, there are few crimes considered more heinous than killing a pregnant woman.  The taking of two lives at once, one of them completely innocent and helpless, holds a special place in loathing today.  I can't imagine how it would be perceived back then, when the infant mortality rate was so high to begin with.
