nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but with labor and hardship we kept working night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you;Paul's focus was to not be dependent on others in his ministry. He worked, and paid his own way, rather than rely on the charity of those he was trying to bring close to Christ. He didn't want to seem like he was doing this for personal gain or to pay his way.
Paul's actions were concerned on those who might be looking in from outside, as well. He gave them no ammunition from which to attack his motives. Also, he showed to those within the church how they should live, not being a burden to others when it could be avoided.
