Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.This verse feels kind of misplaced in the passage. The surrounding verses talk about being humble and purifying heart. It seems like a large leap from humility to being miserable.
I'm speculating here, but I think what we're supposed to be mourning what we did in our past lives. We were happy and carefree, before we knew the truth. Once we understand how wrong we were, we should mourn our bad choices and turn away from them.
If only it were always that simple...
