For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.Only one person sinned originally. However, that one person's sin set the mold for all his children, and their children, and so on. So although it only took one person to mess things up, everyone who came after would have to pay the price.
Fortunately, the reverse is also true. At best, normally we could only hope for one perfect life to atone for one sinful. However, since that one person was Jesus, God's Son, his atonement could carry on through all who became His (spiritual) children, and make the broken connection possible again.
