Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?The believers were arguing over what the standard of conduct should be for those who had trusted Jesus, especially the Gentiles. However, there was a disagreement about whether the Mosaic Law still should apply, or it had been deprecated. Some of the Jews believed it had worked for them, so why shouldn't it be continued?
The problem was that it hadn't worked. Part of the reason Jesus had to come and die was because, even with the Law, the Jews had been unable to keep it. Continuing it for Gentile believers would have been reverting to requiring an impossible standard.
