He who dwells in this city will die by the sword and by family and by pestilence; but he who goes out and falls away to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live, and he will have his own life as booty.On the surface, this seem like a very odd command from God. They're to go out from Jerusalem, God's holy city, and surrender themselves to the Babylonians? And if they don't, God will see to it that they die? Why isn't He protecting them instead?
The answer, however, is simple. The Judeans had fallen away from God, and only were asking of Him now to avoid their own destruction. God won't be used as a "break glass in case of emergency" device. They had thrown their faith in Him away, and now had to suffer the consequences.
