"And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also.The Jews had had Jesus crucified, perhaps only a few months before. Whatever they thought about Him and the crucifixion, everyone knew about it. Now they're hearing that Jesus was actually what He claimed to be, which puts them at risk of God's punishment.
However, Peter is extending a lifeline, of sorts. He is acknowledging that they didn't realize what they were doing. They still have an opportunity to choose correctly, just as we do today.
