So do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, 'You will not serve the king of Babylon,' for they prophesy a lie to you;Why would a prophet lie to the king? If they know the truth, but decide to tell the king something else, they are risking their own lives against God's wrath. So why do it?
I see two possibilities. First, they don't think there will be consequences from God, so they fear consequences from the king. Second, they aren't real prophets, merely liars who have managed to be right or vague enough to avoid discovery. Either way, they're now being called out.
