But the sons of Israel did not dispossess the Geshurites or the Maacathites; for Geshur and Maacath live among Israel until this day.God had commanded the people to destroy all the inhabitants of the land, but they apparently didn't do this. They had made a treaty with the one tribe, against God's will, but all others were to be destroyed. How different would the Israelites' history have been if they had followed this command, and removed all others from the land? How much of the trouble and testings they went through would have proven unnecessary if they had? Would they have clung to God better, with fewer outsiders to pollute their culture and religion?
We today are called to be set apart in the world, yet we are surrounded by the world. We can't disconnect from it like they should have, but we are called to the same purity. I hope we learn from their mistakes, and don't allow the evil influences to infiltrate our lives.
